The roads: what to expect

Main roads on Naxos are well surfaced and easy to drive, including the fast route from the port down to the southwest beaches. Mountain roads are narrower, with tight bends, steep drops and the occasional goat or slow farm truck, so take them calmly and use your horn on blind corners. A handful of the best beaches, including parts of Aliko and the east coast track from Moutsouna, end in gravel, where you simply slow down and enjoy the adventure.

None of this is difficult, but it does reward a car you feel comfortable in. If mountain villages and rougher tracks are on your list, an SUV or a hybrid crossover adds confidence, while town and beach trips are easy in any of our compact cars.

Parking made simple

The golden rule is to park outside the old quarter of Naxos Town and walk in, since the lanes of the Kastro are pedestrian and far too narrow for a car. There are free parking areas near the port and around the edge of town. Villages have free lots at their entrances, and beaches offer informal parking behind the dunes, always free.

A smaller car makes parking effortless in the busiest spots. The compact Peugeot 108 or Fiat Panda slip into gaps that larger vehicles cannot, which is a real advantage in high season.

Never block a resident's gate or a narrow lane, and avoid the marked spots reserved for taxis and buses near the port. In the evening, arrive a little earlier for dinner in a popular village, since the closest spaces fill quickly once the tavernas get busy. A short walk is always part of the charm.

Fuel, EVs and practicalities

Fill up in or near Naxos Town, where fuel is cheapest and stations are plentiful. The mountains and the far south and east have very few petrol stations, so top up before a long day out. Most stations accept cards, but carry some cash for the smaller ones.

Rules of the road

Drive on the right and overtake on the left. Seat belts are compulsory for everyone, and child seats are required for young children, which we can arrange in advance. Speed limits are lower than you might expect on the winding roads, and it is illegal to use a phone without a hands free kit.
