Naxos Villages: A Drive Through the Island's Mountain Heart

Halki and the Tragaea valley

Halki, the old capital of Naxos, sits amid the green Tragaea valley surrounded by olive groves and Byzantine churches. Wander its neoclassical lanes, visit the Vallindras distillery to taste the local citron liqueur called kitron, and browse the small galleries and shops. It makes a perfect first stop and a natural base for exploring the wider valley.

The Tragaea is dotted with some of the oldest churches in Greece, several with frescoes many centuries old. It is a gentle, shaded drive that contrasts beautifully with the bright coast, and it links neatly to a beach day on the way home.

Halki is small enough to explore on foot in an hour, but most visitors linger far longer over a coffee or a plate of local cheese. Look for the Panagia Protothroni church and the Venetian Barozzi tower, then follow the shaded footpaths that connect the surrounding hamlets if you fancy a short walk between stops.

Apeiranthos, the marble village

Built almost entirely of marble and clinging to the slopes of Mount Fanari, Apeiranthos is the most atmospheric village on Naxos. Its stone alleys, marble paved squares and small museums invite slow wandering, and the cafes on the edge of the village serve valley views with your coffee. The residents speak a distinct dialect and take fierce pride in their traditions.

The drive up from Filoti is a series of sweeping curves with big views, so a comfortable, willing car makes it a pleasure rather than a chore. A hybrid such as the Citroen C3 Aircross Hybrid handles the climbs smoothly while sipping fuel.

Filoti and Mount Zas

Filoti is the largest mountain village, spread across the slopes below Mount Zas, also called Zeus, the highest peak in the Cyclades at 1004 metres. Its plane shaded square is a lovely place to pause for a meze and a cold drink. From nearby you can start the hike to the summit or to the Cave of Zas, where myth says the god was raised.

Even if you do not hike, the drive around Filoti and the tavernas alone are worth the trip. This stretch forms the backbone of the mountain loop in our road trip itinerary.

The full walk to the summit of Zas takes around three hours there and back and is best tackled early in the morning before the heat builds. Wear proper shoes, carry plenty of water, and start from the Aria Spring trailhead just outside Filoti. Even a short stroll up the lower slopes gives you sweeping views across the Tragaea valley to the sea.

Koronos, Apollonas and the north

For a longer loop, continue north from Apeiranthos through Koronos, an emery mining village stacked dramatically in a ravine, down to the fishing harbour of Apollonas on the north coast. Apollonas is home to the Kouros, a giant unfinished marble statue lying in an ancient quarry, and a pleasant beach for a swim and a late lunch.

Temple of Demeter and the lowland villages

Closer to the coast, the Temple of Demeter near Sangri is a beautifully restored ancient sanctuary set among quiet fields, well worth a short detour. The surrounding lowland villages such as Sangri and Melanes hide Venetian towers, old marble workshops and shaded kouros statues in green gardens.

These sights sit only a short drive from Naxos Town, so they slot easily into an afternoon before returning to the beaches for sunset. A small, nimble car like the Fiat Panda is perfect for these narrow lanes.

Practical tips for village drives

Fuel up in Naxos Town before heading inland, as mountain stations are few. Park at the edge of each village and walk in, since the cores are narrow and often pedestrian. Take the curves gently, use your horn on blind bends, and allow more time than the distance suggests because you will want to stop often.
